Aug 2, 2016. Oil on canvas. 20 x 27cm

After 6 months learning in Taipei I had improved.

A lot of fundamental concept was gained during the sketching exercise. And my colour sense has been improved through the class at master Tang.

When I first went to Taipei in February 2016, I went to plein air painting gathering and people told me that although I had learnt 3 years but I was really knew very little about painting.

In July, I planned to terminate my course in Taipei since I had been very sick and I knew that travelling every week was harmful to my health. Therefore when I got better I decided to go to Taipei one last time to say goodbye to my teachers and friends.

It was a farewell plein air session. I was still not feeling very well that day. Almost vomited during the ride. And I was bitten by a bee at my neck.

As a result I did not put a lot of effort in this painting.

Yet when I finished, one of the experienced painter made this statement:

“We had all practised painting for more than 20 years and not be able to paint such nice colour. You must have got the anywhere door from Doraemon. That is why from incompetence to a master you only require 1 second.”

That was a serious compliment. But of course I didn’t feel that he was right.

The Taiwanese painting friends including a Japanese painter who taught art in Italy. Like myself, he travelled far away to learn from the master.

Mr. Yip 葉燕城 was also my teacher. He was also a famous painter in Taiwan.
